What camera should I use for Glambot?
Choosing the right filming equipment for your Glambot® is crucial for capturing smooth, dynamic moments that define the experience you are trying to create. Two of our most commonly used cameras to film with in the arena of live events are the GoPro 11/12 and the Canon R8.
Both cameras bring their unique strengths to the table, offering Glambot® Owners the tools needed to bring their vision to life. But how do they stack up against each other in high-pressure, live event environments? Let’s dive in.
GoPro 11/12: The Compact Powerhouse
The GoPro, known for its rugged, waterproof design and portable size, is a game-changer for event coverage. Its ease of use and versatility make it a beloved choice for those needing to move quickly and adapt to changing settings.
Pros:
Cost-Effectiveness: When budget is a consideration, the GoPro stands out as a significantly less expensive option, making it accessible for beginners and professionals alike.
Ease of Use: With its straightforward interface and durable design, it's built for the rough and tumble, dynamic environment of events, making it less intimidating for non-professionals.
Portability: Its compact size allows it to be mounted on the Glambot®, capturing high-speed action with ease and from angles that traditional setups couldn’t achieve.
Smoothness: The GoPro is arguably the smoothest action camera on the market. This make it an easy paring with Glambot® without needing a camera with IBIS or a lens that has stabilization.
Focusing: The GoPro is a champion at auto focus and allows for a wide field of view. Filming 1 person or 10 people is not problem and the GoPro is able to keep everything in focus.
Cons:
Lower Light Performance: While the GoPro performs admirably in many conditions, filming with a GoPro will require some really good video lights such as Nanlites. Low-light environments can challenge GoPros capabilities, potentially leading to grainier footage than desired.
Sharpness: Largely due to the lens and enhanced smoothing, GoPro footage in general will look less sharp. This will be most noticeable in people’s facial details like a man’s beard. Some videos may look like there is a smoothing filter on them even if it is not desired.
Canon R8: The High-Definition Hero
On the other side, the Canon R8, a powerhouse in the DSLR world, brings unparalleled clarity and depth to event filming. Its sensor size and advanced image processing capabilities ensure that even the most minute details are captured in stunning clarity.
Pros:
Superior Image Quality: For professionals seeking the highest definition footage, the Canon R8’s capabilities are robust, especially in well-lit environments.
Smoothness: The R8’s built in IBIS system is perfect for use with Glambot® to help ensure a smooth shot; although, the R8 is not quite as good as the GoPro especially on lower Glambot® speed settings.
Aesthetic: Overall, the R8 looks more professional and higher-end when attached to the end-effector of Glambot®. For higher-end clients, a DSLR will definitely help to justify a heftier price tag.
Versatility: With a vast range of lenses and accessories available, the R8 can be adapted to virtually any filming situation, offering creative flexibility.
Raw Files: The unprocessed files on the cameras SD card are much higher quality and larger than the GoPro. Around 90mb per video compared to 40mb on the GoPro.
Cons:
Price and Complexity: Excellence comes at a price, not just in dollars but in the learning curve required to fully exploit its vast capabilities. Although the body itself is not that expensive, purchasing a lens that will create the intended image quality adds significant cost.
Lower Light Performance: Like the GoPro, lighting is key and the Canon is no exception. Good lighting will be necessary to achieve the highest quality shot.
Portability Issues: Compared to the GoPro, the Canon R8 is bulkier, potentially limiting its effectiveness in ultra-dynamic, high-motion scenarios like those captured by the Glambot®.
Focusing: Although good, the auto focus on the R8 will intermittently not be quick enough to focus the shot while Glambot® is moving. Although rare, it can happen especially in scenarios where the background is the same color as the foreground.
Conclusion: The Right Tool for the Job
Choosing between the GoPro and DSLR for filming live events with a Glambot® ultimately boils down to the specific needs of the project. For quick, dynamic coverage that doesn’t break the bank, the GoPro is an unbeatable option. But for those seeking the pinnacle of image quality and performance, the Canon R8 emerges as the clear victor.
